When Should I Seek Professional Support?

From my experience most people only come to seem me for the first time when they are quite distressed and their symptoms are at the severe end of the scale.  It is like a last resort, and they are very anxious when they first walk in the door, fearful of what therapy is all about.  A lot of them have not sought help early and their illness has progressed – the strategies they have used in the past have not helped this time.

It is advisable to address any health issues earlier rather than later.  I liken it to getting a cold – if you start caring for yourself at the first sign of symptoms, maybe suck throat lozenges, maybe take vitamin C, rest, increase fluids etc. you may prevent the cold or at least reduce the severity and duration of your illness. ask sai baba  Basically the sooner you start looking after yourself and treating the symptoms, the faster you improve. Mental wellbeing is no different.

I notice that many people who have already had therapy seem to seek help sooner if symptoms recur.  Many people who have seen me in the past often do not wait as long to get help again, they book an appointment when their symptoms are mild to moderate.  I suspect this happens because they are more aware of what is happening this time, they have past experience to guide them and know they can do something about it rather than just hoping it will go away. Maybe they are also less reluctant to get help as they are more comfortable with the idea of asking for help and know what is involved.

I would like to see more of us also getting guidance or support when well and there is no crisis.  As I’ve said previously gyms are full of people being coached to enhance their physical wellbeing, building their strength, looking after their bones and hearts for example, so why not invest in our minds and strengthen our emotional wellbeing.  It is pleasing to see that some schools and defence forces across the globe are now being proactive in this area.  They are investing in the mental wellbeing of their students and personnel, equipping them with skills to inoculate them against mental illness rather than just treating them if and when a problem arises.
